STORYTELLING
Our virtual collection of stories provides national access and an in-depth look into the individual stories and shared experiences of Veterans throughout history.
75th Anniversary Of The U.S. Air Force
As we honor the United States Air Force for 75 years of dedicated service as a branch of the military, it is important to realize that the story of the Air Force begins long before it became an official branch on September 18, 1947.
- Exploring the Civil Air Patrol – The NVMM went on the road to watch the Central Ohio Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) conduct training exercises.
- The History and Lineage of the U.S. Air Force – The Air Force traces its lineage back to the first gliders and aeroplanes produced by Orville and Wilbur Wright in Dayton, Ohio at the turn of the 20th century.
- Visiting the MNUSAF – The Air Force traces its lineage back to the first gliders and aeroplanes produced by Orville and Wilbur Wright in Dayton, Ohio at the turn of the 20th century.

EXHIBITIONS
Depicting the Invisible: A Portrait Series of Veterans Suffering from PTSD
Inspired by the harrowing statistic from the VA that 22 Veterans commit suicide every day in our country, artist Susan J. Barron created a series of mixed-media works on canvas featuring Veterans and their stories of life with PTSD.
EXHIBITIONS
The Twenty-Year War: Our Next Greatest Generation
The Twenty-Year War exhibition calls attention to the captivating and personal stories of courage, sacrifice and continued service of those who have served our country during the Global War on Terror through blogs, podcasts and video clips.
“Honoring our nation’s Veterans and their families has been important to Big Lots and to me personally. The National Veterans Memorial and Museum is a place every American should experience, and we feel fortunate that it’s located near our headquarters here in Columbus. We are proud to continue to support the work they’re doing to ensure the stories and legacies of our nation’s service members are shared and remember for generations to come.”
Bruce Thorn, President and CEO, Big Lots
NATIONAL CEREMONIES
The Museum welcomed special guest speaker, Sergeant Major of the Army Jack Tilley, U.S. Army (Retired), Vietnam and Global War on Terror (GWOT) Veteran.
Participants from across the country joined us as we remembered our fallen service members through a series of events and ceremonies. Cheryl Mason, Chairman of the Board of Veteran’s Appeals provided the keynote message.
The NVMM honored all those who lost their lives on that fateful day 21 years ago.
Guests joined in-person and online to honor and celebrate the selfless service of millions of Veterans who have defended our freedoms and way of life.
NEW THIS YEAR
Resilience & Wellness Program
In 2022, the National Veterans Memorial Museum continued in its mission to bolster the connection between the public and Veterans with the launch of the NVMM Resilience and Wellness Program. The vision of this program is to create an environment fostering a strong sense of camaraderie, belonging, and purpose bringing together our communities and those who served.
eCommerce Launch
This year, the National Veteran’s Memorial and Museum launched the online shop, Shop NVMM, designed to uplift and promote Veteran-owned and Veteran-operated businesses throughout the country. After their service, many Veterans continue on with a new mission: to create and grow their own businesses.
Purchases from ShopNVMM help support their next mission in life.
“All these years later, I found myself in a position where I could, in some small way, give back to our nation’s Veterans who gave so much and asked for so little. I had to do something and seeing as though rock n’ roll seems to be what I do best, it’s also the least I could for those who served and continue to serve our country. I’m an example, if you never forget your father – a Gold Star kid can grow up to make a difference.”
